Abstract
Using the framework of 'translanguaging' (understood primarily as a communication strategy with a free use of two or more languages), the chapter analyses two examples of children's books, which refer to theme of Polish migration to Great Britain. "Kasia's Surprise" (2010) by Stella Gurney and "The Weight of Water" (2012) by Sarah Crossan introduce selected words and expressions in Polish as part of their English narratives, thus encouraging intercultral and interlingual communication among children speaking different languages. The author argues that the point behind this device is not to criticise the hegemonic position of English, but to legitimise the interlingual transfer as standard way of making meaning in British multicultural communities. She concludes that this kind of literature offers a more effective education approach not only to language learning, but also to enhancing intergrational practices in multicultural communities of both countries.
