Abstract

The chapter discusses selected samples of diverse childrens' literature through the lense of gender studies. Its methodological framework draws on broadly understood feminist and gender issues as presented in Polish children’s literature published after 2000. It seeks to establish the potential that selected girls’ stories offer for addressing such feminist concerns as oppressive power of patriarchy, political dominance of male leaders, history of exclusion and lack of gender equality. The engendering reading mode entails investigation of transgressive behavioural patterns the selected protagonists illustrate. The approach also draws attention to various complexities and ambiguities the texts entail albeit asserting their general potential for subverting gender stereotypes and offering (young) readers feminist empowerment.
