Abstract

This presentation will offer insights into a less common (or perhaps under-reported) collaboration between English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Widening Participation (WP) at a Russel Group University in the UK. Despite many converging aims of enabling students’ transition into higher education, EAP and WP units in the University of Glasgow have not collaborated much before, resulting in the limited familiarity with each other’s work. In this talk, we will draw from our experiential and empirical knowledge to share the impact of one such collaboration not only on the asylum-seeking students it aimed to support but equally importantly on the academic and administrative staff in both units allowing us to learn and value each other’s contributions to the wider university’s goals of transforming lives and bringing communities together. After introducing our context, rationale for the collaboration and the results it has yielded in the last two years, we will focus on the administrative, academic, professional, and financial challenges such initiative can pose, and the measures undertaken to address them. Our talk will highlight the need for collective effort to make such a collaboration successful and discuss some of the key findings from our current research project.
