Abstract

Injury to the facial nerve, which is the seventh cranial nerve, may lead to weakness of facial expression muscles resulting in a condition known as facial paralysis. Descriptions of facial paralysis have been noted since antiquity and notably associated with Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842) who delineated its anatomical basis and furthered our understanding of its pathophysiology. Although such historical information could be regarded as out-dated, compared to modern peer-reviewed scientific literature, these and their accompanying illustrations show us the evolution of knowledge in relation to human anatomy and pathologies making them ideal for science communication purposes. In this talk, we will discuss how we developed our https://facialparalysisaware.weebly.com/ which hosts a virtual exhibition of historical anatomical/medical illustrations on facial paralysis from the University of Glasgow’s Archives and Special Collections. We will share our knowledge on how to create websites as venue-free platforms that could be flexibly accessed reaching wider audiences.
