Abstract

This chapter focuses on changing local structures of patient and public involvement (PPI) in the English NHS. We offer a historical overview of local structures of PPI over the decades, then review recent evidence on Healthwatch, which has been in place since 2012. We argue that the landscape of PPI has become increasingly disaggregated and diffuse within the English NHS, and reflect on the implications for NHS accountability to the population it serves.
