Abstract

The Latin American experience of popular education is rightly renowned for its approach towards the educational dimension of participatory community development. Acknowledging the difficulties in making sweeping generalizations, this article examines theory and practice in Latin American popular education over the last forty years, including its relationship with social movements and the state, and discusses the potential contribution of the Latin American experience to communities outside the region.
