Abstract

This write-up delves into our recent experiences of conducting a trioethnographic study that embraced the principles of creativity, dialogue, and an ethic of care and love. Our methodology and analysis techniques sparked considerable interest among the attendees of the conference session. In the conference paper presentation write-up, we will discuss the challenges we encountered while implementing our guiding principles, particularly during the writing phase. Additionally, we will shed light on a creative aspect of our research project that garnered significant engagement and enjoyment from our session participants: blackout poetry. The first part of our write-up will focus on reflecting on the multiple sites of resistance we encountered throughout the research process, specifically during the writing stage. While we had a prior working relationship in the EAP for Social Justice SIG, we discovered that it was crucial to engage in multiple reflection circles to build trust and create a safe space for vulnerability. We will delve into our journey of establishing trust and the importance of feeling safe enough to share our vulnerabilities. Another obstacle arose during the writing stage when we unintentionally gravitated towards the conventions of traditional academic papers, contradicting our initial intention to break free from those constraints. We will critically reflect on these difficulties, providing insights into how we overcame them and encouraging EAP practitioners to embrace collaborative and creative inquiries despite the challenges they may present. In the second part of the write-up, we will explore one particularly creative aspect of our research project that generated remarkable engagement and enjoyment among our session's attendees: blackout poetry. We will outline the basic principles and steps involved in creating blackout poetry, emphasizing its versatility as both a research tool and a pedagogical resource. By showcasing a selection of blackout poems created during our session, we aim to inspire other researchers and practitioners to integrate this innovative approach into their own work. By combining reflection on resistance within our research process with an exploration of blackout poetry's potential, we aim to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on creative and collaborative research methodologies. We believe that sharing our experiences and insights will encourage EAP practitioners to embrace alternative paradigms, fostering a supportive and inclusive research community. Through this write-up, we hope to inspire others to engage in similar endeavours, nurturing creativity, dialogue, and an ethic of care in their own research and pedagogical practices.
