Abstract
Multimodal oral presentations form part of many summative assessment suites on EAP courses. Yet, there has been scant attention to what teachers and students value in these, often high-stakes, multimodal performances. This presentation shares data from questionnaires, interviews, field notes and rating discussions from fieldwork conducted at 2 EAP sites. The talk shares stated and perceived constructs (Macqueen 2022) underlying oral presentation assessments, specifically the treatment of different modes (e.g., speech, gestures, text on slides). In doing so, how modes may be overvalued and undervalued in oral presentations in EAP settings is discussed.
