Abstract

People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Reduced kidney function and increased urinary albumin excretion cumulatively increase cardiovascular risk. Although there is a high prevalence of conventional cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension in CKD patients, the additional risk is independent of these. Advanced CKD has a specific dyslipidemia phenotype. Conventional approaches to lipid lowering reduce risk of cardiovascular events in people with CKD who do not require dialysis treatment. In patients with kidney failure treated with dialysis, clinical trials have not shown benefit in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol on risk of cardiovascular events.
