Abstract

Yonder By is a live concert recording made at The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow in 2017. The recording represents an extension of the performance ecosystem developed for the earlier composition ‘o ire’, a solo laptop work, adding capacity for collaboration with other musicians. In this case the piece takes the form of a trio of voice, guitar and laptop. As in o ire, the research attempts to integrate spatial and spectral dimensions of live sound manipulation, through a framework of spatial dynamics that exploits simple relations such as inward/outward, here/there, and through/between. It aims to create an intimate, immersive experience inviting listeners to come ‘close by’ to the personal sonic world of the performers. This performance in particular explores the rich improvisation of Kazakh vocalist Saadet Türköz (https://saadet.ch) and guitarist Neil Davidson (http://neildavidsonevents.blogspot.com), using the laptop to build dense, spatialised textures from performed utterance. The performance was realised in ambisonic surround sound, and the recorded album is a binaural reduction best listened to via headphones to reproduce spatial imaging.
