Le discours Ad pastorem de Jean Climaque et son Commentaire par Nicéphore Calliste ‎Xanthopoulos : ‎édition critique de la partie finale

Abstract

Le présent article retrace d’abord l’histoire de la riche tradition manuscrite du discours Au pasteur, dernière pièce de l’Échelle, livre ascétique composé au VIIe siècle par saint Jean du Sinaï (connu aussi sous le nom de Jean Climaque). La réception de ce discours est également étudiée à travers son Commentaire rédigé par Nicéphore Calliste Xanthopoulos au XIVe siècle. Cet article propose ensuite une édition de la dernière partie du texte Au pasteur commenté par Nicéphore, qui est un éloge métaphorique de la perfection de l’higoumène, supérieur du monastère et guide des moines. L’édition est basée sur l’unique témoin de l’exégèse de Nicéphore (la fin du codex Chig. gr. 38) ; les lemmes du texte de Jean Climaque inclus dans le Commentaire sont édités en tenant compte de l’abondante tradition directe de l’Échelle afin d’identifier un modèle manuscrit probablement utilisé par l’exégète. The present paper traces firstly the history of the rich manuscript tradition of the discourse To the shepherd (Πρὸς τὸν ποιμένα), the last piece of the Ladder (Κλίμαξ), an ascetic book composed in the 7th century by Saint John of Sinai (also known as John Climacus). The reception of this discourse is also studied through its Commentary (Ἐξήγησις) written by Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos in the 14th century. Secondly, this article provides an edition of the final part of the text To the shepherd commented by Nikephoros which is a metaphorical praise of the perfection of the hegumen, monastic leader and guide of monks. The edition is based on the unique witness of the Nikephoros’ exegesis (the end of the codex Chig. gr. 38) ; the lemmas of John Climacus’ text included in the Commentary, are edited taking into account the abundant direct tradition of the Ladder in order to identify a manuscript model possibly used by the exegete.
