Abstract

Current design methods for monopiles – the dominant foundation type for offshore wind turbines do not properly account for cyclic loading and rate effects. The PICASO (Pile Cyclic AnalySis: Oxford and Ørsted) project aims to address this shortcoming by developing a new design method for cyclic lateral loading. Medium scale field testing, against which an improved design methodology can be validated, is an essential part of the PICASO project. This paper describes the field testing which was completed at an over-consolidated glacial till site in Cowden, Hull, UK. The focus is on test methodology with a brief introduction to the PICASO project and test site characterisation for context. Test results from a pile subjected to 1-way sinusoidal loading at three different cyclic magnitudes provide initial insights into pile behaviour for cyclic lateral loading of increasing severity.
