Abstract

The aim of this research was to seek to advance understanding of current attitudes towards residential space standards in the UK and to compare these with the moral values underpinning three contested policies that influence levels of housing consumption: the single occupant Council Tax discount, the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) Shared Accommodation Rate, and the removal of the spare room subsidy (popularly known as the “Bedroom Tax”). In doing so, our aim was also to establish a consensual view on what a minimum residential space standard should be.
