Abstract

This article makes use of four travelogues - by Nikolai Karamzin, Helen Maria Williams, Heinrich Meister and Friedrich Johann Meyer - to explore how the perspectives of the revolutionary city varied between four different foreign visitors. In doing so, it engages with spatial theory and proposes that, by taking into account as wide a range of political points of view as well as social background, gender and nationality, it might be possible to build a 'European' panorama of revolutionary Paris and of the physical and symbolic tranformations that it underwent under the impact of the French Revolution.
