Abstract

This is a film of the performance and discussion of The Seaweed Gatherers. The project is a collaboration between Graham Eatough, composer Daryl Jamieson (Kyushu University) and Mull based artist Miek Zwamborn. This performance focuses on Miek Zwamborn's book, The 'Seaweed Gatherer's Handbook' alongside research from Jamieson into the 15th century Noh text, Mekari (The Seaweed Harvest). This research furthers Eatough's exploration of archipelagic dramaturgy drawing on Edouard Glissant's 'Poetics of Relation', and develops a new strand around Manthia Diawara's work (following Glissant) on the 'new sacred'. The work explores ancient narratives and rituals of costal and island life and their relevance and potential impact for contemporary communities such as those on the Ross of Mull and island of Kyushu, on whom the research focuses. An initial workshop was held in September 2022 with Eatough, Zwanborn, Jamieson and a group of 5 professional actor and musicians.
