Abstract

Objectives: Neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) is a common disease affecting dairy and beef herds all over the world. In Europe, the treatment of sick calves is regulated to a certain extent by law, but the decision on management, treatment and medical choices is made by the attending veterinarian and to some extent part of the farmers’ responsibility. The goal of this study was to survey management practices regarding the antibiotic treatment of neonatal calf diarrhea in different European countries and to identify influencing factors. Materials and methods: A voluntary online survey was conducted in Austria, Belgium, Portugal and Scotland between February 2016 and January 2019. The survey comprised 21 questions, covering the medical treatment of NCD and husbandry practices regarding sick calves. The data was analyzed by means of logistic regression analysis and classification and regression tree (CART) analyses. Results: A total of 873 farmers and veterinarians participated. The most commonly reported antibiotics used to treat NCD were fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and penicillins. More than 50 % of the participants reported that they used antibiotics when treating NCD. The likelihood of a veterinarian using antibiotics to treat NCD varied based on their age, with older veterinarians using them less frequently compared to younger ones. Conclusions: The results of this study revealed a pressing requirement for additional scientific evidence regarding the treatment of NCD. Management practices may be enhanced through targeted training and agreement on criteria for treatment, particularly for antibiotic therapy.
