Abstract

Student evaluations of teaching are embedded into higher education however there is persistent debate surrounding their reliability, effectiveness and bias. On the other hand, NSS results persistently show that students respond poorly to questions relating to their learning community and the student voice. To better understand these trends, four students and a member of staff worked together to address how staff and students engage with student evaluations. Students expressed that their feedback could improve a course's content, quality and delivery and provide a learning opportunity for lecturers and while staff implement the feedback they receive, students currently do not see it, and their learning may not benefit from being part of this process. During this presentation, we will explore student evaluations, or feedback, as a dialogue tool to encourage and develop relationships between staff and students and to promote learning and educational development.
