Abstract

A better understanding of the use of open spaces is vital to inform good policy and management of these important public resources. So far, data is very limited on open space use and traditional methods to gather data are resource intensive and often lack spatio-temporal detail or site-specific information. New forms of Digital Footprints Data generated using mobile phone applications, with their scale and historical availability, may offer the potential to overcome this issue and provide timely information on open space use which can help to deliver informed policy. Towards this end, our research is undertaken in collaboration with Glasgow City Council and their open spaces team. In light of the very limited data availability on open spaces in Glasgow, which is common across the UK, we sought to utilise new forms of mobile phone app data to explore the use of a large selection of open spaces. We use this novel data in an innovative way to estimate monthly visitation numbers to over 50 open spaces and to explore change in visitor numbers for local and non-local groups in the context of Glasgow’s 2020 Open Spaces Strategy and the pandemic restrictions of 2020 and 2021.
