Abstract

When the currently ruling Czech right-of-centre coalition led by PM Petr Fiala won the election in the autumn of 2021, and took over power from the populist oligarch Andrej Babiš, many people were relieved thinking that the Czech Republic was returning to normal West-European democratic politics. But the Fiala government has turned out to be extremely inefficient and very bad at communication, which is surprising since Petr Fiala is a university professor, a specialist in political science and thus surely he should be able to communicate with the voting public. The Fiala government has not acted against the rising poverty in the Czech Republic and over the past few days it has damaged its pro-Ukrainian reputation since one of its ministers Pavel Blažek, who is being accused of various types of corrupt behaviour, met a pro-Russian collaborator in a restaurant for five hours. Fiala will not sack the minister. Jan Čulík discusses these matters with the head of the Prague branch of New York University, political scientist Jiří Pehe. The Interview was broadcast by the cable TV Náš Region from Tuesday 29th August 2023.
