Abstract

This paper analyses how the entrepreneurial decision modes of internationalizing SMEs evolve over time. It draws on a qualitative study of fifteen established Egyptian SMEs that are embedded in an uncertain and volatile context. Their entrepreneurs’ decisions in respect of internationalization follow three evolutionary pathways and also in some cases move between them over time. The propensity to adopt a certain entrepreneurial decision mode is associated with the nature of the domestic and international contexts, key characteristics of individual decision maker, entrepreneurial intentionality, subsequent decision modes and the outcomes of previous decisions. Over time, entrepreneurial decision modes co-evolve with contextual changes and internationalization outcomes. A theoretical model derived from the empirical findings offers an understanding of the dynamic nature of entrepreneurial decision modes of internationalizing SMEs and suggests avenues for future research.
