Abstract
This introductory chapter sets the scene for the first ever Handbook on Migration and Ageing. Migration and ageing are key elements of demographic change, with far-reaching implications for the economy, public policy, societal cohesion and individual wellbeing. The chapter begins by presenting recent statistics and commentary from international organisations such as the United Nations to demonstrate why the nexus of ageing and migration is an important angle of investigation for an array of disciplines, and why the time is ripe for a Handbook on migration and ageing. Consideration will then be given to offering insights into what population ageing means, what characterises the era of migration, as well as to the scholarly infrastructures in migration studies and social gerontology that focus on this nexus. In the final section, an overview of the chapters which comprise the handbook is offered, as well as the rationale behind the structure of the Handbook.
