Performing the paradox in the theatre of Tristan Tzara

Abstract

Co-founder of the Dada movement, Tristan Tzara, wrote and produced three stage plays during the Paris Dada period (1920–1923). This article discusses Tzara's third play, The Gas Heart (1921) to show his unique application of theatricality. The text of The Gas Heart is interrupted in Act III by a dance presented as a typographical illustration. While event programmes substantiate the performance of the dance during presentations of the play (1921 and 1923) it remains unknown how the diagram informed the action of the dance. I argue that Tzara's dance exemplifies the paradox central to Tzara's creative programme. Applying Samuel Weber's definition of theatricality, this paper explores The Gas Heart dance as an expression of ‘singular duplicity’ (Weber, 2004), but one that opens ways for performing the paradox in the theatre of Tristan Tzara. = Cofondateur du mouvement Dada, Tristan Tzara a écrit et produit trois pièces de théâtre pendant la période Dada Paris (1920–1923). Cet article traite de la troisième pièce de Tristan Tzara, « Le Cœur à gaz » (1921), pour étayer son application unique de la théâtralité. Le texte de « Le Cœur à gaz » est interrompu à l'acte III par une danse présentée comme une illustration typographique. Alors que les programmes d'événements justifient l'exécution de la danse lors des présentations de la pièce (1921 et 1923), on ne sait toujours pas comment le diagramme a informé l'action de la danse. Je soutiens que la danse de Tzara illustre le paradoxe au centre du programme créatif de Tzara. Appliquant la définition de la théâtralité de Samuel Weber, cet article explore la danse de « Le Cœur à gaz » comme expression de la « duplicité singulière » (Weber, 2004), mais une qui ouvre des voies autres pour interpréter le paradoxe dans le théâtre de Tristan Tzara.
