Abstract
Let us hear some voices from somewhere other than Prague sometime! In Havířov, Northern Moravia (300 km from Prague!) the monthly cost of living for a two-room apartment is CZK 18,000 (650 pounds sterling). Jan Čulík talks to Petr Haraším a Britské listy commentator from Orlová, "the most depressing city in the Czech Republic", about how the Czech citizens are sinking into insolvency and how Czech politicians seem unable to do anything about it, having no strategy for the country's economic and political development. An iron rule of Czech public debate: the more common a solution which is used in developed democratic countries, the more it works and has little in common with ideology, the more certain it will be labelled "communism" by Czech politicians and rejected. From car regulation in cities to income tax progression.
