Abstract

This case focuses on a charitable organisation operating in one of the most deprived areas in Scotland. The organisation started as a project and has developed in a responsive way with the needs of the community. The project began as a means to green the urban environment and has evolved over time into a diverse and multifaceted charity which creates a variety of opportunities for those involved. At the 'decision point' the charity considers itself more of a health and wellbeing charity. It has two garden sites, one of which incorporates a natural play area for children. The organisation has grown steadily in the 9 years that the protagonist reflects on in the case, with an initial income of GBP3,500 in 2010 and an income of GBP245,000 in 2018, going from having volunteers to several employees, running multiple (sometimes disconnected) projects, funded by a variety of charity funders. The organisation is still largely operating as if it were just a collection of projects, as opposed to as an organisation with a clear vision and mission. The core question the protagonist needs to address during the case is what decisions/actions are needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of UrbanGarden?
