Abstract
Teachers, frustrated with the static nature of their classrooms, have turned to metaphors for learning spaces (e.g., Hews, 2013). Archetypal learning spaces identified by Thornburg (2013) include the campfire (storytelling), watering hole (social learning), cave (independent reflection), and life (application). Thornburg’s holodeck represents immersive learning experiences using technology. ‘Islands of innovation’ is an annual professional development event, originating at the Centre for Innovation in Education, University of Liverpool (Reis et al., 2023). Inspired by the Centre’s Treasure Island Pedagogies podcast series, the first iteration of this online event in 2022 used the metaphor of treasure islands in SpatialChat. This year, the focus will be on intergalactic islands, with participants undertaking space missions. This session will introduce participants to metaphoric learning spaces and provide a ‘taster’ for this year’s event. Participants will be encouraged to suggest metaphors as learning spaces and consider – through exploration (using SpatialChat) – how these might actively engage learners.
