Abstract

In this interactive workshop, we will take you on a journey through space. Using Thornburg’s (2013) concept of metaphorical learning spaces, in the platform SpatialChat, we will encourage participants to think about how learners can be inducted into – and engage with – active learning in virtual spaces, and what makes for a ‘safe space’. Metaphorical spaces outlined by Thornburg include the campfire (for storytelling), the waterhole (for social learning and collaboration), life (for meaningful application and problem solving), and the cave (for individual quite reflection). The holodeck – in this case SpatialChat – is an immersive environment configured to encompass all these archetypal spaces, in which students are encouraged to go on missions to solve real-world challenges. How do we prepare our students for these ‘missions’? How do we onboard, support and engage our learners in virtual space (many of whom are neurodiverse or have disabilities)? Let us invite you into the holodeck, where we will reflect on and discuss approaches to solving these real-world challenges!
