Abstract

In the final chapter, we revisited how this follow-up edited collection builds on our book ‘The Hidden Curriculum in Doctoral Education’. By synthesising the distinct and collective lessons learned from the book contributors, we presented a new theorisation of the concept—the Hidden Curriculum as a continuum. These domains in the Hidden Curriculum continuum (i.e. structured, informal and not yet existing pedagogies) offer explicit ways of harnessing the pedagogies. This continuum provides greater clarity concerning where they come from, what they are driven by and their added benefits, with clear examples based on the book chapters. Additionally, this chapter offers three conceptualisations of researcher independence—as an endeavour, a process and an outcome—highlighting the implications for practice while featuring apt examples from the respective book chapters. The chapter ends with the fitting metaphor of a redwood forest, enabling us to demonstrate the interconnection among the development of researcher independence, the Hidden Curriculum, interdependence and doctoral well-being, and in turn, leveraging this concept of the Hidden Curriculum to foster a thriving doctoral scholar experience.
