Abstract
Lessons acquired via the Hidden Curriculum within the context of doctoral education tend to be equally elusive and ubiquitous. Such lessons take various shapes and forms and are likely to be situated in differing ecological milieus. Despite its seemingly inherent complexity, the Hidden Curriculum can offer genuine and pedagogically sound learning. As an example, two doctoral scholars may have a shared experience, e.g. workshop participation, yet only one recognises and harnesses the hidden lessons from this experience. Could this be explained by the expression ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’? What enables one learner but not another, to see such beauty? This raises the pragmatic question of how finding hidden curricular learning can be encouraged, in which metacognition is employed as a theoretical lens. I illustrate in this chapter how invaluable lessons from journal internship, facilitated by interdependent working with the journal team, are likely to lead to cross-fertilisation of ideas, open new possibilities and enrich the overall doctoral experience. This chapter further elucidates how having a disposition for employing metacognition, can be invaluable in creating knowledge, advancing learning, and in turn, facilitating independence and competence among researchers.
