Abstract

In this chapter, we offer our rationale for writing this book by setting the context and indicating what this edited collection has to offer. In so doing, we started by clarifying competing concepts or widely held beliefs surrounding doctoral well-being, researcher independence and interdependence (as well as their implications for researcher independence in practice), and the Hidden Curriculum as a channel of genuine doctoral pedagogies. We then discuss the very idea that is central to this book, i.e. that researcher independence can be developed and enhanced via awareness, careful reflection and usage of the Hidden Curriculum. Our argument helps explain the various book chapters that follow. The final section discusses how the book is designed to meet its objective, including how the entire book has been structured.
