Abstract

One way that doctoral scholars can better develop the ability to critically engage with the literature in their field is through participation in a journal club. Often informal and unofficial in nature, these can be considered ‘Hidden Curriculum’ within doctoral education by serving as authentic pedagogical spaces for learning. Through collectively discussing and critiquing articles, journal clubs offer an interdependent space in which scholars arguably learn together about the more implicitly hidden approaches for independent critical engagement expected of postgraduate researchers. Drawing from an autoethnographic exploration of our own participation in a journal club, this chapter describes what being part of a monthly journal club means for developing the researcher independence of a group of doctoral scholars, augmented with quotes from our reflections. We describe the multiple dimensions of learning, personal aspects of participation, and environmental aspects of our experiences that we learned through our exploration, framed through the theory of reciprocal determinism. We conclude that journal clubs can offer an authentic and safe interdependent learning space for developing researcher independence.
