Abstract

After the head of the Education Department of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR) was dismissed and replaced by a police officer with no historical background, the ÚSTR Education Department staff resigned. In an interview with Jan Čulík, one of those affected, historian and educator Jaroslav Najbert, explains the context. The new leadership of ÚSTR, appointed by the Senate, as well as the new Council of ÚSTR, resented the independent, academic approach of the Education Department to history. The demand was to disseminate ideology. Thus, partly out of dilettantism, partly out of ill will, the members of the Senate and the ÚSTR Council destroyed an important professional department whose task was to create for schools a modern, pluralistic, critical approach to the teaching of history, which was to serve as a model for the Ministry of Education for a similar reform of teaching in other subjects. The Department of Education at ÚSTR is closing after its staff's notice period ends this June. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Náš Region from 9th May, 2023.
