Abstract

Empirical studies on corporate governance have long been dominated by quantitative methods. While such quantitative studies can be useful, the approach has its limitations due to the multifaceted nature of corporate governance, including the gaps between theoretical frameworks and the methods used, the omission of contextual measures and the inappropriate use of variables and specification of models. This chapter aims to discuss the potential combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches in corporate governance research, both theoretically and empirically. Using an example of a test of the theory of the resources-based view in institutional contexts, we show how an interview-based qualitative study can provide the means to explore ways of improving proxies, identifying new measures of strategic resources and constructing better models for quantitative analysis. This sheds light on the meaningful combination and integration of quantitative and qualitative data in mixed methods research.
