Abstract
The chapter explores a neglected body of theoretical literature written in Latin in the early eighteenth century that formalises traditional techniques of textual criticism into more systematic method. The most well known example is Le Clerc's Ars Critica. This is supplemented with a discussion of other less well known examples. They are situated in their social and intellectual context, and their relationship to developments in other disciplines is explored. A final section on 'historia literaria' explores how methodological developments related to narratives about the nature of scholarship.
