Abstract

The aim of this research study was to investigate middle school students’ mistakes in solving questions about the angle concept. This qualitative study was conducted in two different public schools in İstanbul during the 2014-2015 academic year spring semester. The participants were 6th grade students (n = 256) in two different public schools in the same district in İstanbul. Student responses to open-ended questions developed by the researchers constituted the data analyzed in this study. Student answers were analyzed by using descriptive methods and Bloom’s Taxonomy as a conceptual framework. Overall analyses of student responses indicated that students had difficulties in solving questions that assessed knowledge, application, and evaluation levels. Students’ performances in the question that required one-word responses to a classification were relatively high. More specifically, students demonstrated difficulties in providing definitions of angle related concepts and explanations of reasoning behind rules related to angles. Besides, it was observed that students tended to memorize rules and they failed to view geometry as a consistent system of concepts building on top of each other and provide meaningful explanations behind a given rule by using shapes.
