Abstract

These nine short stories explore a wide variety of human experience, written by a neurologist who is also a clinical scientist and novelist. The first and longest of these, Malignant Invasion, imagines a progressive and uniformly fatal neurological disease having a personality of its own and documents in chilling detail all the damage it does to its human victim. The other stories in this collection cover many aspects of human character and instinctive fears, and all illustrate the general themes of this book which are both confused reality and the possible impact of magical realism and the supernatural – both real and imagined – on the difficult process of everyday living in an increasingly complicated and confusing world.
