Abstract

Academics, university lecturers, especially in the humanities at Czech universities, especially at Charles University in prague, but throughout the Czech Republic, have shockingly low salaries. This is a fundamental attack on the essence of the Czech Republic, because the humanities in universities go right to the roots of what we are. Pre-war Czechoslovakia knew well that democracy cannot survive without high quality education. Now the Prague Faculty of Arts has come up with the shocking solution of financially supporting only those fields of study that are "economically beneficial" at this moment. At the same time, a huge revolution in employment is coming in society, as most of the existing jobs will be taken over by artificial intelligence. Why are Czech politicians (PM Petr Fiala wants to put of the retirement age at a time when jobs will disappear! :) ) and university managers sticking their heads in the sand? Why don't Czech university teachers strike? The British are striking. Jan Čulík talks to Jakub Jirsa, a philosopher from the Arts Faculty at Charles University in Prague, about what is causing this scandalous situation. This Britské listy interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Our Region from Tuesday 28th February 2023.
