Abstract
Come explore what lessons can be learned from an international conversation on Scotland's education system and work to ensure new teachers are profession- ready. A ’Blether' in colloquial Scottish means to have a good chat. Join representatives from the University of Glasgow in a conversation, an international blether, in a case study of Scotland's evolving approach to educator preparation. This session welcomes participants to consider Scotland's response to the changing needs of the profession, better understand educator preparation in contexts different from our own, and expand opportunities for dialogue across systems through sharing of practices, policies, and professional standards. Education in Scotland has been called a ‘pioneer' and ‘sector-leading' in recent OECD reports, and Scotland's national curriculum has been noted as ’inspiring' and widely supported. What does teacher preparation in Scotland look like? How is it meeting the needs of teachers and learners of tomorrow in a way that is distinct from the rest of the United Kingdom in a global context? Participants are invited to examine strengths and challenges that exist in Scottish teacher education with a focus on key priorities including closing the poverty-related attainment gap, social justice, sustainability, and equity. We will consider how Scottish education can inform a clear, creative, and pragmatic way forward that builds on current successes in teacher education, provides real opportunities for learners, better supports teachers and practitioners, and demonstrates Scotland's world-leading education credentials. Participants will consider what teacher preparation programmes in America and beyond might glean from the Scottish model; practices of professional enquiry, incorporation into Scots law of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), and the entitlement of learning for sustainability will be shared. Learning Objectives: Consider examples of Scotland's response to the evolving needs of the profession Expand opportunities for dialogue across systems through sharing of practices, policies, and professional standards Better understand educator preparation in contexts other than our own
