Abstract

Why is it that the citizens living in Silesia and the Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem regions vote for Babiš? Voices could be heard in Prague, Brno and other Czech cities that this was because "country people are stupid". However, for more than thirty-three years, no Czech government has attempted to bring the standard of living in these areas into line with that in other parts of the Czech Republic, and no one is planning to do any levelling up now. People are struggling with unemployment, debt slavery, dysfunctional public transport and healthcare, and a lack of infrastructure. All the local press has been liquidated, so no one is analyzing what is going on anymore. What will happen when large numbers of Czech citizens lose their homes? Jan Čulík talks about the impending destabilisation of Czech society with analyst Stanislav Biler. This Britské listy Interview was broadcast on the cable TV channel Regionálnítelevize.cz (Our Region) from Friday 3 February 2023.
