Abstract

Heimat in three words. A collaborative TV Dictionary production. Made by Johannes Binotto, Cormac Donnelly, Chloé Galibert-Laîné, Ian Garwood, Oswald Iten, Ben Evan James, Alice Lenay, belit sağ, Charlie Shackleton, Guli Silberstein, Ben Spatz, Jialu Zhu. Part of the TV Dictionary collection: TV Dictionary The process: I shared a document containing a list of different definitions of the English-language words "mist" and "missed" and the German-language word "Mist" (27 definitions in total). Each participant was asked to choose a definition and to match it with one of the photos in the video. Noone was allowed to choose a definition or a photo that had already been taken by someone else. There was an option for participants to make up their own definition of one of the words if they wanted to (an option taken up by two participants). I then added the definitions to the video, in the appropriate places, offering English and German translations of the definition in each case (thanks to Oswald Iten for correcting the German translations!). When I showed the completed video to the group, it was clear that one or two had thought I was going to do something different with the quotations. That led to me making the alternative cut, 'Mist Opportunities', which you can watch and read about here: vimeo.com/user18948906/ Video Essay Conference, Hotel Paxmontana, Switzerland, 7th December, 2022.
