Abstract

Background Lung V/Q scans may be performed using 99mTc-technegas then 99mTc-MAA administrations. As 99mTc is used for both imaging procedures, a perfusion count rate considerably greater than the ventilation count rate is required. Local DRLs for V/Q are 20 MBq 99mTc-technegas and 100 MBq 99mTc-MAA. However, the activity administered for ventilation will vary due to the nature of the administration procedure. Aims To investigate the perfusion:ventilation count rates obtained in clinical practice and to determine the influence of BMI, perfusion count rate (cpsQ) and ventilation count rate (cpsV) on this ratio (cpsQ/cpsV). Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 50 consecutive patients. BMI, cpsQ, cpsV and cpsQ/cpsV were recorded. Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between cpsQ/cpsV and BMI, cpsQ, cpsV. Results Average cpsQ/cpsV was 4.9 (SD=1.3) with a minimum of 2.3. 14% of patients had a ratio <4.0. cpsQ/cpsV was found to be correlated with BMI, cpsQ, cpsV (Pearson coefficient, P<0.001). Conclusions Variation in cpsQ/cpsV was observed in clinical practice. This ratio was dependent on BMI, cpsQ and cpsV. Local practice includes an assessment of cpsQ/cpsV for individual patients.
