Abstract
Place value concept plays a key role in primary and middle school mathematics curriculum. It is a crucial concept to understand number structure and arithmetic operations. Even though it is taught over and over in different contexts and grade levels, research suggest that children and trainee teachers have difficulties conceptualizing this concept. The literature on the other hand falls short in articulating the nature of teacher knowledge, whereas teacher knowledge plays a key role in fostering pupils' understanding. The current study aims to investigate qualified teachers' understanding of place value concept and the nature of their specialized content knowledge. The participants are 27 qualified teachers who teach grades 1-8. The teachers have teaching experience ranging from 3 to 45 years – some are retired but working in private schools. The data comes from the videotapes and artifacts of the semi-structured interviews. In the interviews the teachers are provided with five different scenarios consisting of alternative pupil solutions about arithmetic operations and asked to analyse these scenarios. The qualitative data analysis is still in progress. The first level analysis of the data reveals that teachers do not draw on a conceptual analysis of place value concept when explaining arithmetic algorithms. When probed about given scenarios, teachers give answers like "because this is a rule".
