Abstract

In this short digestion of a successfully-received virtual field class we share the ethos, considerations and reflections of staff involved in lockdown-response field class design and delivery. Importantly we also highlight the lived experience of a third-year student engaging with the field class. In wrestling with what could be replicated from an in-person field class we settled on themes of inclusive collaborative community and active learning. The nuts and bolts of field class delivery, in terms of platforms, interfaces and exercise formats are shared highlighting authentic problem-based learning. Student consultation, flexible engagement options and valuing of reflective practice were the backbone of the field class and were instrumental in delivering an inclusive and rewarding learning experience.
