Abstract

This chapter discusses anesthesia of the abdominal wall in equine. Paravertebral thoracolumbar anesthesia can be used as an alternative to infiltration anesthesia or an epidural during standing procedures when incisions of the flank are required. Thoracolumbar paravertebral block (TPVB) can be used for a range of standing surgical procedures including laparoscopic surgeries, granulosa cell tumor removal, exploratory laparotomy surgeries such as colic cases and cryptorchid surgery. Desensitizing the transversus abdominis plane is potentially useful for: surgical procedures of the abdominal cavity using a median or paramedian approach in the anesthetized horse. An intercostal nerve block for desensitization of the ventral and lateral abdominal and thoracic wall has been described.
