Abstract
Reading comprehension (RC) is often found impaired among individuals with dyslexia as a by-product of more primary word-level difficulties. Some nonetheless present an adequate RC level, albeit with impaired reading fluency, known as RC resiliency. In an examination of adolescents (average age: 16 years-old) with (n = 56) and without dyslexia (n = 39); the present study investigates predictors of RC resiliency focusing on oral language semantic abilities’ (i.e., vocabulary and listening comprehension) role along with the effect of socio-economic status (SES). RC resiliency was found to be greater in individuals with dyslexia than typical readers and was notably predicted by vocabulary through listening comprehension in a double mediation model. Importantly this model revealed that SES indirectly predicted listening comprehension via predicting vocabulary level. Consequently, SES is a significant risk factor to acknowledge when considering RC achievement and resiliency among individuals with dyslexia.
