Abstract

A short, lighthearted exploration of how Columbo anticipated the rigours of 24/7 attentive labour in the 21st Century. The audiovisual medium enables a brevity to the argument: condensing, playing in tandem, juxtaposing, or cutting together otherwise historically diverse moments in the life of the show. In particular, the videoessay explores the repetitiveness of Columbo’s exhausting 24/7 work, including his labouring at screens (using the rhythms created by visual loops in split screen, or repeated verbal phrases). It similarly investigates the ambiguity surrounding reading – its pleasures, but also its essential and tiring role in Columbo’s perpetual on-the-job learning. Across both screens and books what emerges is the importance of perpetual attention for a productive, if exhausting, life as an attentive labourer under 24/7 capitalism.
