Abstract

Of 1604 groundwaters sampled from wells in Norwegian crystalline bedrock, 13.9% exceeded the recommended action level of 500 Bq /1 radon and 16.1% exceeded the drinking water limit of 1.5 m g/ 1 fluoride. 476 of these 1604 samples were selected, on the basis of geographical and lithological representativity , for ICP-MS analysis of a range of trace elements . Very few violations of recognised drinking water limits were observed for Bi, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb , Tl or W . 7 of 476 samples exceeded 10 μg/1 As , 31/476 exceeded 0.2 μg/1 Be (Russian limit; only 1/476 samples exceeded the American limit of 4 μg/1), 6/476 exceeded 50 μg/1 Ni, while 85/476 (18%) exceeded the American drinking water limit of 20 μg/1 U. The maximum recorded Be, Th, Tl and U concentrations were 6.6, 3.1, 0 .25 and 750 μg/1, respectively . All of these four elements exhibit elevated concentrations in granitic aquifers, as do Rn and F.
