Abstract

Hydrogeology is perhaps the science which 11s most poorly understood by the public at large. Despite groundwater being our most important geological resource, the subject is still pervaded by superstition. Groundwater is usually simply rainwater percolating through the ground in permeable formations, or aquifers. The basis of sound aquifer management is a good understanding of the aquifer’s water balance. Such understanding is necessary for solving current problems of overabstraction and rising water tables. Imaginative conjunctive use, artificial recharge and induced recharge schemes can optimalize the sensible exploitation of groundwater resources.
