Abstract

Sets of three 4 free space wavelength radius Luneburg lenses with a 140° spherical metallic cap are used to increase the RCS of buoys and small fishing and leisure boats above the required RCS of 8.75dBm2 at 9.4GHz. It was found that the Luneburg lenses can be replaced with lower cost homogeneous spheres having εr between 2.1 and 2.7, matching common low cost plastics. The optimized air filled gap between the spheres and metallic cap was different for each εr . An effective media matching layer halved the air gap for the εr=2.54 lens which gave RCS 6dBm2 higher than the requirement.
