Abstract
The centrality of ‘storytelling and listening’ was key to the cultural policy of the allies in both parts of Germany after WWII. Those in charge of what was to happen to the countries in question were badly in need of stories. Just like in the era of the Enlightenment, in the post-war Eastern European society the foundations of a new kind of interaction between the power, the public and the intellectuals were set. The article looks at the functioning of Friendship Societies in the Soviet Occupation Zone (Sowjetische Besatzungszone, SBZ) in Germany/ the early GDR.
