Abstract
The plays of Václav Havel, the well-known Czech playwright and dissident, and post-1989 the first Czechoslovak post-communist president fall into four different categories, each of them delineated by a particular historical era. However, from the beginning of his writing career in the early 1960s, Havel has faithfully recorded the unequal relationship between powerful, ageing men and young women, whom the aging men are trying to get into bed at all costs. Remarkably, these motifs have become invisible to reviewers and literary scholars. This is the first academic piece ever written that analyses the development of these themes in Havel's plays. The study is a part of a publication brought out to mark the sixtieth birthday of the Prague literary scholar and specialist in cultural studies Professor Petr Bílek of Charles University.
